There are many reasons why watching in Victor Harbor is popular. During whale season there are several ways to see the whales passing by or basking in our turquoise waters.
To spot whales from the land, here are the best whale-watching vantage points:
You can also stop by the South Australia Whale Centre or jump on their Facebook Page to check the most recent sightings in the area. Check out their interactive exhibits and activities while you’re visiting.
If you haven’t had any luck spotting whales from the shore, don’t worry. The best whale sightings in Victor Harbor happen from the sea! Hop on board The Big Duck Boat Tours and go on The Southern Ocean Adventure, departing at the end of the causeway on Granite Island. The tour takes you to inaccessible islands and areas of coastline where you can admire the spectacular views and spot seals, sea lions, dolphins and whales in the wild. Keen bird watchers can also spot sea birds fishing the surrounding waters. The tour operators will also give you valuable insights into these wonderful marine creatures.
Typically, whale season in Victor Harbor runs from late May to October when the whales migrate to the warmer, sheltered waters of Encounter Bay to socialise, court, and raise their calves before heading back down south to Antarctica. This creates the perfect excuse for a winter getaway to the region.

One of South Australia’s most exciting tourist attractions. Urimbirra Wildlife Park is located in Hindmarsh Valley just 5 minutes from Victor Harbor, a favoured holiday destination. We have a range of Australian animals and a wonderful park for you to explore every day (including Public Holidays). Pet a kangaroo, pat a koala, feed an emu and watch a professional snake handler! Our exciting list of activities will ensure you have a fantastic day in Victor Harbor, South Australia.
Situated five kilometres north of popular Victor Harbor, the Urimbirra Wildlife Park is a 40-acre open-range wildlife park which includes 16 acres of wetland bird sanctuary.
Urimbirra is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘to preserve’ or ‘to take care of’. The site has evidence of canoe and shield trees of Aboriginal tribal activity many hundreds of years ago. Urimbirra gives you the chance to see more than 70 species of Australian fauna in their natural surroundings. Amidst giant old gum trees, kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, emus, dingos and wombats may be viewed. Whilst on the lake, pelicans, spoonbills, black swans, egrets and Cape Barren geese may be readily seen. The paths through the park allow you to see the animals at close range and a leisurely walk through the 16-hectare site is a photographers delight.

The SteamRanger Heritage Railway operates a number of different heritage steam and diesel hauled tourist trains between Mt Barker in the Adelaide Hills, up over the crest of the southern Mt Lofty Ranges, down to Strathalbyn and on through the coastal holiday towns of Goolwa and Port Elliot to the tourist resort town of Victor Harbor.
Trains operate on up to 140 days a year and are manned by volunteers from the Australian Railways Historical Society, who are also responsible for maintenance of the rail line and the heritage locomotives and carriages.
We will guarantee a great day out for you, your family or your colleagues. Our philosophy is that when you buy a ticket you are not just buying a train ride but a whole new experience!
The Cockle Train
The Cockle Train travels along the oldest steel railed railway in Australia. The 30 minute journey joins Goolwa near the mouth of the mighty River Murray to the bustling tourist centre of Victor Harbor
Between Victor Harbor and Port Elliot you will travel along some of the most picturesque coastal scenery on the Fleurieu Peninsula, with nothing separating you from the beach below and a perfect view of the Southern Ocean – in winter the home of Southern Right Whale
Why is this icon journey called the “Cockle Train”? In early days of settlement the local residents would take a horse drawn train to Goolwa to collect Cockles from the sandy beaches near the Murray mouth. It was a great day’s outing and thus gained its name.
Services operate Easter, most S.A. School holidays and every Sunday and Wednesday.
Steam locos, heritage railcars and vintage diesel locos are scheduled on dates shown in our timetables.
