The privately owned marsupial sanctuary was established on the farm by Gary and Sandy Retallick as a Genetic Ark for Australia’s rare and endangered Marsupial wildlife.

Located on 600 acres in the picturesque Hindmarsh Valley, South Australia, (near Victor Harbor), Softfoot’s aim is to breed healthy and vigorous alpacas, producing high yields of soft and uniform fibre that can perform in a commercial context. Softfoot’s focus on this goal has led to immense gains over the past 10 years, resulting in Softfoot winning Best Overall Exhibitor at nearly all shows attended in recent history.

The Retallick family have also endeavoured to improve their lands in an eco-friendly manner by:

  • Extensive plantings of Australian native trees and shrubs
  • Construction of a large wetland for bird and aquatic species
  • Creation of 4 fully fenced feral proof Sanctuaries and several enclosed intensive breeding facilities for endangered Australian Marsupials.
  • Focusing on farming Alpacas, well known for their environmental benefits over other livestock.
